Ransomware attacks are increasing rapidly. An independent global survey by Pollfish looked at 1,100 cybersecurity and IT professionals and found that in 2021, 80% of the organizations reported ransomware attacks that year. Over 60% of those reporting attacks also paid the ransom. As these digital assaults continue to be common, there are steps a business can take to mitigate the damage should an attack occur.
Secure and Quarantine the Affected Machine
As soon as possible, isolate the infected system or computer to prevent further ransomware spreading. Immediately turn off infected machines, also disconnecting them from the network. Be aware that ransomware attacks may include multiple machines.
Remove the Malware
Control the spread by quickly removing the malware and changing passwords. It is also a good idea to contact your local law enforcement to report the attack.
Identify what lead to the breach so you can secure weak areas and prevent it from happening again.
Inform Employees First
Let employees know what is happening and what is being done to mitigate damage. This will allow them to be on the alert for further ransomware attacks.
Customers will want to know how the breach will affect them. If they will be experiencing customer service issues, it is important to relay this information and when these issues will be resolved.
Being prepared can help lessen damage to your business.
